Something You Should Know This Week
NYT: What You Can Learn About Job-Hunting From Dating Apps
Writer Kelly Marie Coyne published a cheeky piece this week in The New York Times on how the dating and job markets “aren’t that different.”
Recruiters = swipers.
“Recruiters just glance at your profile,” Kyle Lagunas, head of strategy and principal analyst at Aptitude Research, a research-based advisory firm, told Coyne for the article. “You’re going to have 15 seconds before they swipe.”
Job hunting made romantic.
The article features a list of parallels between recruiting and dating, and advice for navigating the “dates” we go on when we’re looking for a job. Take, for example, “love-bombing.” In dating, it’s about receiving excessive compliments, gifts, and other affectionate gestures without a promise of exclusivity. In job-hunting, it’s receiving flattery and promises of promotion rather than a pay raise or reasonable starting salary. Another one: In dating, “ghosting” is when one person doesn’t respond to a follow-up after a date. In job-hunting, it’s when you don’t hear back from the recruiter after interviewing for a job.
Is Tinder the new LinkedIn?
Believe it or not, some people are actually taking to the dating apps to find a job. A Wall Street Journal piece from 2023 dove into how both young professionals and employers are increasingly using dating apps to talk shop —sharing resumes, open roles, and other professional opportunities.
Pro tip: Don’t do this.
Our two cents: Use the dating apps for finding dates, and the job boards for finding jobs. But if you’re tempted … check out Bumble Bizz, a separate section of the dating app Bumble that focuses on making professional connections. There, you have our full permission to network your heart away. 💘
