LinkedIn Learning: Most In-Demand Skills For Employers in 2024

This week, LinkedIn released its annual “Most In-Demand Skills” list, revealing the skills business leaders are most looking for when they are hiring. Spoiler alert: The top skill does NOT require experience in AI.

Keep up the chit chat …
… because this year’s most in-demand skill is communication, for the second year in a row. LinkedIn noted that they saw many human-centric “soft skills” (aka “human” or “durable” skills), like communication, as traits employers are looking for. Other skills at the top of the list — customer service, leadership, project management — are said to be business-critical, especially in the age of AI, according to the report.

Human skills > AI.
The survey looked at which skills appeared most in job listings on the platform between May 2023 and October 2023, and also considered how many recent hires on the platform possessed the skill. "I believe we are in the early days of a world of work that is more human than before,” said LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky in a nod to the recent debate over how the emergence of AI will impact jobs. “[This gives] us the chance to do more fulfilling work, and to do that work more easily and effectively with others."

Top skill “of the moment.”
In addition to a high-level look at the overall most in-demand skills, the report analyzed micro-trends by looking at top-rated skills in six-month period from 2022 and compared it to the same period in 2023, to see which skills grew most quickly. The skill that rose to the top with this methodology: Adaptability. “Adaptability is the best way to have agency right now,” said LinkedIn VP Aneesh Raman. “At the core of managing change is building that muscle of adaptability.”
