🎨 AI's creative coup

Is AI coming for creative jobs?

👋 Hey there, TA folks! You can be assured this is a real email. Why do we mention it? Because 39% of HR managers post “ghost” job listings. Yep. According to a recent survey of 649 HR pros: 67% post them to appear open to external talent, 62% to make workers feel replaceable, and 59% to simply collect resumes and contact them at a later date.

Just in case it needs to be said, it should be absolutely clear—this is NOT a recommended practice.

NEWS
One Thing You Should Know This Week
Forbes: Generative AI As A Killer Of Creative Jobs? Hold That Thought.

Is AI going to take creative jobs? It’s likely. But how many, and how long it will take, is up for debate.

👉️ Why this matters.
OpenAI CTO Mira Murati raised both eyebrows and headlines by suggesting that AI will replace creative jobs that “maybe shouldn’t have been there in the first place.” No surprise that the CTO of the world’s most visible AI company would be bullish on AI, but her remarks caused outrage amongst artists worldwide.

🧑‍🎨 The other side.
Artists—many of whom have had their works fed to these AI models to make them so smart—believe that AI will take jobs and discourage real creativity.

💼 What this means for TAs.
Oddly enough, the surge in AI has caused a 40% increase in freelance work at creative agencies. It’s not entirely clear if this is because of job losses in the field or if the work being posted is to assist, correct, or otherwise tweak AI-generated work.

⚡️ Going deeper.
AI was the hot topic at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity this year (long name! Could use AI to shorten it!), with those in favor of the technology, such as Erik Hawkins, Meta’s VP of Global Partners, espousing how companies saw a 22% return on every marketing dollar spent using Meta’s AI tools.

 🌊 Our take.
Just like any emerging technology, AI will create new opportunities while replacing old ones. But time will tell what these jobs are and how this will shake out. We’re at the beginning of a big wave.

💡 Of note.
Adobe VP Deepa Subramaniam—whose company made $19 billion in 2023 thanks in large part to their Creative Cloud products, which recently added generative AI features—believes we're currently living in a "golden age of creativity and design.”
