The Big Thing You Need To Know This Week
NBC News: Blue-collar hiring and pay gains stay hot in a cooling job market

Change in job listing volume from Feb. ‘20. Source: NBC News via Indeed via St. Louis Federal Reserve.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? Blue-collar workers are gaining momentum in a cooling job market. This week’s jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that blue-collar workers are riding a wave of stronger hiring, with increased job opportunities and faster pay growth compared to their white-collar counterparts. The jobs report showed that after two years of rapid growth, the market is showing signs of a slowdown, with total job gains decreasing from an average of 399,000 per month to 232,000 this year. 🧑‍🏭

WHO IS HURTING THE MOST? The tech sector, in particular, is still facing a significant pullback with mass layoffs and reduced hiring as it adjusts to higher interest rates and course corrections for a pandemic-era glut. 💻

WHY DOES IT MATTER? High demand for miners, loggers and construction workers — and slowing job prospects for software and IT professionals — has taken a bite out of income inequality, according to reporting from NBC News. 🏦
