🤦‍♀️ Only 1 in 10 women

...think their company is taking gender equality seriously.

👋 Welcome back! If it brings you any comfort, even CEOs cringe over something they said to a coworker.

“I have a deep feeling of love for all of you,” Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky wrote in a 2020 letter to employees he was laying off, words he now says he regrets: “I wrote that letter fairly quickly,” Chesky said on a recent podcast appearance. “I didn’t have a lot of time, and so I wrote what I felt and that’s what I felt, and I was pretty emotional when I was writing it.” Yes, cringe. But also cute!

NEWS
One Thing You Should Know This Week
Deloitte Releases Annual “Women @ Work” Report

This week, consulting giant Deloitte dropped their annual Women @ Work report, and it’s a mix of progress and *sighs* we need to do better.

Why it matters.
Deloitte’s survey, which polled over 5,000 women in 10 countries, shows that despite ongoing efforts, gender equality still has a long way to go. Nearly all women (95%) feel that requesting or taking advantage of flexible working opportunities will jeopardize their chance to climb the ladder, and a jaw-dropping 43% have faced some form of harassment at work in the past year.

Mental health remains a challenge.
Stress levels are sky-high, with 50% of women saying they're more stressed now than they were a year ago, and over half (56%) saying their mental health struggles decrease their productivity. The report suggests that our new work-from-anywhere world isn’t helping, with blurred lines between work and home life adding to the stress pile.

Work-life balance …
… remains a significant struggle. 60% of women say they struggle to keep the scales even, citing heavy workloads and not enough flexibility as major culprits.

Women are working through health issues.
Over a quarter of women said they face significant health challenges from menstruation, menopause, or fertility issues. Over 40% said they have pushed through menstrual pain without taking time off, and 39% said they have endured menopause-related discomfort at work (this number nearly doubled from 2023). Discussing these health issues with managers remains uncomfortable for many, with a higher proportion of women reporting career setbacks after such conversations than last year.

Why you should care.
Most women are sticking with their employer for about two and a half years—and it's clear why. Only 1 in 10 think their company is seriously tackling gender equality, and just a quarter say they see a diverse leadership team above them. Adding to the challenge, 40% of women have faced micro-aggressions or harassment this past year, and nearly half worry about their safety at work or while traveling for work. Plus, a quarter say they have had to deal with inappropriate comments or actions from senior leaders. It’s no surprise that while 75% of women say they want to climb to senior leadership, 25% don’t feel the same way.

Reality check.
“The stark reality conveyed by this data cannot be ignored,” Deloitte executives Emma Codd and Elizabeth Faber said in the report. “It is our hope that organizations will use this critical insight to help drive meaningful and sustained change and enable gender equality in workplaces around the world.”
